Why the site exists

Work choices are often presented as headline numbers: annual salary, hourly rate, days of holiday or a percentage shift premium. Those figures matter, but they rarely describe the whole decision. A better-paid job can require more commuting. An extra workday can create childcare costs. A four-day week can mean either reduced hours or the same hours compressed into longer days.

Work Decisions UK was created to make those trade-offs easier to see. The calculators convert costs, hours and recurring patterns into comparable annual figures so you can test how a proposed change might affect your own situation.

How our calculators are designed

We favour simple, transparent calculations over black-box recommendations. The assumptions are visible on each page and the inputs are provided by you. Where tax, employment rights or contractual terms depend on personal circumstances, the tools ask you to enter an appropriate figure rather than pretending there is one universal answer.

Calculator inputs are processed locally in your browser by the calculator functions. You do not need an account and the site does not require you to submit salary or employment details to use a tool.

How supporting content is produced

Guides and reference pages are built around the same arithmetic used by the tools: formulas are shown, worked examples use stated illustrative inputs and assumptions are kept visible. Where the subject becomes an employment-rights or working-time question, we link to GOV.UK or Acas rather than presenting our own interpretation as authoritative.

Our Methodology & Accuracy page explains annualisation, rota modelling, release checks and the boundary between deterministic calculations and user-defined scenarios. The Work Decision Reference collects the main formulas in one place.

Editorial responsibility and review

Airborne Media & Consultancy Ltd publishes and maintains the calculators and supporting pages. Before release, deterministic outputs are checked against worked examples and meaningful boundary cases. Repeating-rota examples are expanded from their stated anchor dates so readers can inspect the sequence as well as the final number.

We review explanatory content when a calculator changes, when an official source moves or when a correction is reported. Similar calculators must explain the decision that makes each one useful; they are not treated as interchangeable pages simply because they share a calculation engine.

For contractual facts, use your employment contract, employer policy, rota and payroll records. For employment rights and working-time rules, use GOV.UK or Acas. Work Decisions UK does not claim legal, payroll, tax or financial authority.

What the results can and cannot tell you

A calculator result can help you understand the scale of a trade-off. It cannot tell you which job will make you happier, how secure a role will be, whether a working pattern suits your health or family, or what an employment contract legally means. Those qualitative factors may matter more than the number shown on screen.

For decisions involving tax, pensions, benefits, employment rights or contractual interpretation, check authoritative information and obtain professional advice where appropriate.
