Convert days to hours before comparing
Paid leave hours = stated paid leave days × normal paid hours in a leave dayFor example, 20 days based on 10-hour leave days represents 200 paid leave hours. Twenty-five days based on 7-hour leave days represents 175 hours. The second package has more headline days but fewer paid hours under these simplified inputs.
| Package | Leave days entered | Normal hours/day | Paid leave hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 20 | 10 | 200 |
| B | 25 | 7 | 175 |
Why this is only a package comparison
Statutory holiday entitlement and holiday pay depend on working arrangements and current rules. Irregular-hours and part-year workers can require different treatment. Work Decisions does not infer legal entitlement from a rota or convert a comparison table into an employment-rights answer.
Check what a “day” means in each offer
Ask whether the leave figure includes bank holidays, whether leave is deducted in hours or shifts, how partial days are treated and whether contractual leave exceeds the statutory minimum. For rotating shifts, confirm how an overnight shift is booked in the employer's system.
Optional monetary comparison
If the two roles have different hourly values, multiplying paid leave hours by a representative hourly value can help compare the paid benefit. Treat that figure as a compensation comparison, not a calculation of statutory holiday pay.
Use hours to expose what headline days hide
The conversion is especially useful when one role uses long shifts. A 12-hour shift worker who books a full rostered shift as leave may use a very different number of leave hours from somebody working 7.5-hour days. Employers also differ in whether leave balances are displayed in days, hours or shifts, so use the units from the actual offer or policy rather than assuming that one “day” has a standard length.
Run a second comparison with the employer's own units
If both employers quote annual leave in hours, compare those hours directly and do not convert them back to days. If one quotes days and the other hours, first convert the day-based package using the normal paid hours attached to a leave day. Then check bank holidays and any enhanced contractual leave separately.
This guide compares packages you have already been given. It does not decide the statutory amount a worker should receive, and it should not be used to override an employer's leave system or official entitlement calculation.
