How overtime pay is calculated

For an hourly worker, gross overtime pay is the base hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier and the overtime hours. If you enter an annual salary, the calculator first derives an indicative hourly rate by dividing salary by 52 and then by contracted weekly hours.

Important distinction

If £15/hour is paid at 1.5× for 6 overtime hours, the overtime hours pay £135 in total. Of that, £90 is the ordinary £15/hour value of those six hours and £45 is the additional 0.5× premium.

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means a multiplier of 1.5. A £15 base hourly rate would therefore become £22.50 for hours to which that contractual rate applies. Double time uses a multiplier of 2.0, while time-and-a-quarter uses 1.25.

Is there a standard UK overtime rate?

No single overtime multiplier applies to every UK job. GOV.UK says employers do not have to pay workers for overtime, although average pay for total hours worked must not fall below the applicable minimum wage. Employment contracts usually set out any overtime pay rate and how it is calculated.

Worked example

A worker on £15/hour works 37.5 normal hours plus 6 overtime hours at 1.5×. Their ordinary weekly pay is £562.50 and the six overtime hours add £135 gross, producing £697.50 total gross pay for that week. The enhanced premium above ordinary pay is £45.
